The Marlow Murder Club season 2 episodes 1 & 2 guest stars: Barbie movie’s ‘gay icon’ Ken features as potential killer

The Marlow Murder Club season 2 boasts amazing guest stars. As with Midsomer Murders, the great and good of the British acting world appear desperate for a bit part in the picturesque cosy crime.

Episodes one and two, which form one story airing as a double-bill on the same night on Wednesday, March 19, starts with a worried groom being found dead in a locked room during a pre-wedding party.

Guest stars for this story include James Wilby, Tom Stourton, Caroline Langrishe and Yuna Shin - they join the main cast of The Marlow Murder Club.

But who do they play - and where do you recognise them all from?

Tom Stourton as Tristram Bailey

Tom Stourton plays posh, entitled Tristram Bailey, the estranged son of the episode’s murder victim, Sir Peter Bailey. He’s not been invited to the wedding, but turns up to the pre-nuptials party anyway, and accuses his dad’s bride-to-be of being a gold digger.

You’re most likely to recognise his face from the award-winning children’s series (that adults sneakily enjoy too) Horrible Histories, where he was part of the regular cast when the series was revived in 2015.

More recently he had a recurring role in Stath Lets Flats as Stath’s posh estate agent rival Robbie.

But, most interestingly, Tom had a cameo in the 2023 Barbie movie. He played Earring Magic Ken, based on an infamous Ken doll released in 1993, which became very popular with gay men.

James Wilby plays Sir Peter Bailey

James Wilby appears in in The Marlow Murder Club season 2 episode 1 as Sir Peter Bailey, the murder victim. Sir Peter actually invites Marlow's amateur sleuthing trio to his pre-wedding party, fearing that something bad might happen (they prove better at solving the case once it’s happened rather than preventing it in the first place – after all, they’re not the Marlow Home Security Club).

James is most famous for playing the title character in the 1987 Merchant Ivory film Maurice, based on the EM Forster novel about a Cambridge student learning to accept his homosexuality.

He is also known for his role as Lord Falmouth in multiple episodes of the BBC’s most recent version of Poldark. Falmouth was the uncle to Hugh Armitage, whom Poldark rescued from French imprisonment. The thankful Falmouth became one of Poldark’s staunchest political supporters.

The actor was also recently seen in the Guy Ritchie-directed action films The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare as Viscount Algernon.

Caroline Langrishe guest stars as Lady Bailey

Lady Bailey is the ex-wife of Sir Peter Bailey. She still lives in Marlow with their daughter and is proudly holding onto her title until forced to give it up when her husband remarries.

Caroline, who plays Lady Bailey, had a long stint as Charlotte Cavendish in seasons five and six of Lovejoy back in the early ’90s. Charlotte was an auctioneer who eventually became the love interest for Ian McShane’s title character.

She also had a memorable run in Casualty (with guest appearances on Holby City) as an unpopular executive director at the hospital called Marilyn Fox, who tried to get rid of Holby heroes Harry Harper and Maggie Coldwell.

Yuna Shin plays Jenny Page

You might recognise Yuna Shin, the actress playing the episode’s prospective bride, Jenny Page, from another cosy crime show – The Good Ship Murder.

Jenny is Sir Peter’s former nurse. Though he’s much older than her, they still fell in love, and at the start of the episode are about to tie the knot. Sir Peter’s ex-wife and children are all suspicious of her motives for marrying the millionaire.

Yuna has a recurring role on Channel 5’s cruise ship crime show The Good Ship Murder as the ship’s doctor, Sharon Tan. Is she a murder junkie?

The Marlow Murder Club season 2 airs on U&Drama and U from Wednesday March 19 from 8pm
