This City is Ours: Sean Bean plays crime boss as he reunites with members of Time cast in BBC drama
By Helen Fear | Tue Jan 28 2025This City is Ours is a brand new crime drama coming soon to BBC One, which reunites Time star Sean Bean with several of his former cellmates - and it's INSPIRED casting.
The BBC has released first look pictures of the epic series, the brand-new crime drama from Stephen Butchard. And we know we're in safe hands - he's the man behind The Good Mothers, The Last Kingdom, and Five Daughters.
But best of all? Sean Bean as a crime boss... Now, THIS we have to see! Here's everything we know so far about This City is Ours on BBC One, including plot, cast, location, and episodes.
What's the plot of This City is Ours on BBC One?
This City is Ours is described as a story about family, love, corruption, power, ambition, pride and greed. Think The Sopranos, Kin, Animal Kingdom, and Gangs of London.
It introduces Michael, a man up to his neck in organised crime. For all of his adult life, he has worked for gang leader Ronnie. However, when friend and boss Ronnie begins to hint at retirement, Michael too begins to imagine another life...
A synopsis tells us: "Michael is in love. For the first time in his life, he sees beyond the day-to-day. He sees a future... Something to win and something to lose - Diana."
The series follows Michael and Diana's love affair, set against the disintegration of Michael's crime gang. For years, Michael has successfully been bringing cocaine into the City and beyond, directly from Columbia. But when a shipment goes missing, he knows their kingdom is under attack.
The BBC tells us: "This City is Ours explores what happens when Ronnie's son Jamie decides he wants to inherit their kingdom and that there is no longer a place for Michael at the table.
"Both Michael and Jamie have bold ideas to modernise the gang and they will battle for control of it. But Michael’'s biggest battle will be to save the woman he loves and the child he has always wanted."
Where was it filmed?
This City is Ours is set and filmed in and around Liverpool. Which is lucky for half the cast, who stem from the city - including James Nelson-Joyce, Jack McMullen, and Stephen Walters.
There is also additional filming in Spain.
How many episodes is it?
The series is an eight-parter, with each episode being one hour.
We suspect the series will air every Sunday for eight weeks, but BBC One has not yet confirmed how and when the series will run, or if it will be released as a boxset.
Who's in the cast of This City is Ours?
The cast of This City is Ours is led by Sean Bean as crime boss Ronnie Phelan. Sean is, of course, well known to TV viewers as Richard Sharpe in the ITV drama of the same name, Ned Stark in Game of Thrones, and Mark Cobden in Time series 1.
And he's reunited with a fair few of his co-stars in this 2025 drama. James Nelson-Joyce portrays Ronnie's friend and colleague Michael Kavanagh. He's best known for playing thuggish Johnno in Time, as well as Pez in the recent Strike.
Fellow Time star Jack McMullen (aka Daniel) stars as Ronnie's son Jamie Phelan. He's also known for playing Lewis in Hijack. Meanwhile, Belgravia: The Next Chapter star Hannah Onslow stars as Michael's girlfriend Diana Williams.
Lastly, Shetland favourite Julie Graham portrays Elaine, head of the Phelan family alongside her husband Ronnie. Of course, fans will known she was also in Time, although she was in a mostly female cast of series 2.
Elsewhere, Joan star Laura Aikman plays Rachel Duffy, Kevin Harvey (also a former Time star) portrays as Bobby Duffy, Derry Girls' Saoirse-Monica Jackson is Cheryl Crawford, and Shardlake's Mike Noble stars as Banksey.
Completing the ensemble cast is SAS Rogue Heroes' Bobby Schofield as Bonehead, Judy's Darci Shaw as Melissa Sullivan, and Slow Horses' Stephen Walters as Davy Crawford.
