How did the first series of Squid Game end?

You'd be forgiven for forgetting what happened in the show's first season, considering it was more than three years ago now.

The show's first series saw Gi-Hun win the brutal, murderous competition after his old friend, Sang Woo, sacrificed himself.

He then discovered that the old man, Il-Nam had been behind the games. He claimed to have started the games to entertain bored, rich people like himself. However, before Gi-hun could enact any sort of justice, the old man died.

The series ended with Gi-hun, now sporting red hair, ringing the Front Man and demanding to know who is running the games.

What is Squid Game season 2 about?

The second series of the hit Korean drama will follow Gi-Hun as he attempts to find out who is really behind the Squid Game and put a stop to them.

Once again, he takes part in the games, attempting to survive alongside hundreds of other contestants who are desperately fighting for the chance to win the 45.6 billion Won prize.

A synopsis reads: "Three years after winning Squid Game, Player 456 remains determined to find the people behind the game and put an end to their vicious sport. Using this fortune to fund his search, Gi-hun starts with the most obvious of places: look for the man in a sharp suit playing ddakji in the subway.

But when his efforts finally yield results, the path toward taking down the organisation proves to be deadlier than he imagined: to end the game, he needs to re-enter it."

Trailers for the new series have been released. In them, viewers can see Gi-Hun attempting to survive the deadly games he played last time, as well as make sure the new contestants survive.

The question is, will he actually manage to survive a second time around? And will he manage to find out who is really behind the murderous games?

Who is joining the Squid Game season 2 cast?

Netflix also announced that there would be 12 new cast members joining the show.

Viewers will also be introduced to Young-hee’s boyfriend, Cheol-su. Young-hee was the big robot who shot people who moved during Red light, green light.

Squid Game creator knew 'character' would change in season 2

Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter earlier this year, the series creator teased what's next.

"I’ve seen many reactions from people about the show, but I don’t want to make season two as a response to those reactions. The philosophies I put in season one all naturally extend to season two. Instead of trying to meet the expectations of viewers, I just thought about the last moment when Gi-hun turned away from boarding the plane, and I thought about what he will do next," he said.

"There will naturally be a flow of events that will lead all the way to the end of the season. I can’t share any details yet, but you know that Seong Gi-hun has become a totally new person by the end of season one, so season two is going to be about what that new Gi-hun is going to do and how things will unfold with this new kind of character."

Squid Game season 2's release date

There really isn't that long to wait for the new series. Squid Game's season 2 is set to release on Netflix on Boxing Day.

And guess what? There's a third season on the way too. In an open letter to fans, series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk confirmed that the third and final series will be releasing in 2025.
