Must-see new films and TV series on Amazon Prime Video in September
The Grand Tour returns for one last ride this month, while Michael Sheen takes on the role of a surprisingly sweatless Prince Andrew in A Very Royal Scandal
The Grand Tour

Summary:Hit motoring series hosted by Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May. First launched in 2016 with car reviews, studio segments and celebrity guests, the series was revamped in its fourth season to consist entirely of feature-length road trips featuring the trio. The fifth and final series began airing in September 2022, and has so far visited Scandinavia, Eastern Europe and Western Africa.
Why to watch: After 22 years creating Top Gear and The Grand Tour together, this is Clarkson, Hammond and May’s final adventure. Their race across Zimbabwe is sure to be one hell of a ride, providing ample fuel for laughter at home.

A Very Royal Scandal

Summary:Michael Sheen stars as Prince Andrew and Ruth Wilson as Emily Maitlis in this depiction of the latter’s landmark interview with the royal in 2019. This drama follows Maitlis’ professional and personal journey as a Newsnight journalist, leading up to the moment she scored the biggest scoop of her career - and the Duke of York was forced to withdraw from his public roles. Joanna Scanlan, Alex Jennings and Éanna Hardwicke also star.
Why to watch: Maitlis’ interview with Prince Andrew marked a turning point in history, especially for public perceptions of the Royal Family. The scandal is ripe for a film drama, and, as Maitlis herself is an executive producer, we can expect something close to the facts.

Why to watch: A by-the-book thriller that makes good use of narrative twists, Damaged features a talented cast as well as showcasing the ludicrously beautiful Scottish landscape.

Why to watch: The Japanese edition of the hit franchise pulls no punches. This innovative cop drama is Amazon Japan’s first scripted adaptation, based on the original Aussie series. It was such a success for the platform that Amazon went on to create an Italian version, which debuted earlier in 2024.

Why to watch: Filmed on the beautiful island of Crete, Killer Heat is based on the story by the acclaimed Harry Hole writer Jo Nesbø, who is also a producer on the show. The film also boasts a big name cast.

Summary:J.J. Abrams reimagines DC Comics’ Batman and his origin story for a new animated series. His one-man crusade for justice attracts unexpected allies within the GCPD and City Hall, but his heroic actions spawn deadly, unforeseen ramifications.
Why to watch: This new envisioning of the superhero focuses on the detective noir aspects of the character and its setting. This is Batman’s origin story told through a darker lens than its predecessors. It’s also got a kick-ass guest cast, with Christina Ricci as Catwoman, Jason Watkins as Alfred Pennyworth and Minnie Driver as the Penguin.

Why to watch: The most-watched (and certainly most expensive with a reported seasonal budget of $100–150 million) Prime Video original ever, series two picks up after the forging of three rings of power. Series two adds even more star power to the mix: Rory Kinnear will play fan-fave Tom Bombadil, with Ciarán Hinds in a currently unknown recurring role.

Nobody, be they an emperor or slave, is safe in this stylised version of Ancient Rome. Game of Thrones star Iwan Rheon is particularly threatening as crime boss Tenax.

Why to watch: If there's a crossover between motorcycle enthusiasts and fans of The CW, they're in luck. Riverdale star CJ Apa stars in this drama, which is a loving tribute to motorbikes, racing and bike culture. Apa isn't the only face famous from a teen drama in the billing, either, as his co-stars are Eric Dane (Euphoria), Maia Reficco (Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin) and Austin North (Outer Banks).
