The 31 must-see Christmas films for each day in December
It’s that time again. Our Christmas trees are up, The Pogues are playing on the radio and festive films are top of the Netflix charts. Last year, there were 31 million streams of the streamer’s Lindsay Lohan-led festive film Falling For Christmas in just four days. Already in 2024, Netflix’s new Meet Me Next Christmas grabbed 18.1 million streams in its first week in November. Whether it's the nostalgia, the predictability, or the cosiness, there’s something undeniably appealing about a good festive flick. Here, we’ve compiled 31 of the best Christmas movies to watch - one for each day of December.
Die Hard
Action | Thriller
1988 | John McTiernan | 132 mins | 18
Summary:In this action thriller, Bruce Willis stars as John McClane, an off-duty NYPD detective who hopes to win back his estranged wife at her company’s Christmas Eve party. Instead, he witnesses armed terrorists seize the building and take partygoers hostage, hoping to secure bearer bonds from the building's vault. It’s up to McClane, on his own, to stop them.
Why you should watch: This Christmas film is a debatable one, which is why it’s perfect for December the 1st, when whether the Christmas period has actually started is also debatable. In all honesty, this is an excellent film all year around. The action scenes are legendary, as is Willis’ oft-quoted John McClane. It’s such a classic, in fact, that in 2024 festive thrillers are still trying to replicate its success. New Netflix film Carry On director Jaume Collet-Serra called the Die Hard “our North Star for the entire [filmmaking] process”.

Carol
Romance | Drama
2015 | Todd Haynes | 118 mins
Summary:Based on the semi-autobiographical novel of the same name by Tom Ripley author Patricia Highsmith, Carol is a groundbreaking lesbian drama set in 1950s New York at Christmas. Cannes Best Actress winner Rooney Mara stars as Therese, a photographer, who falls for the titular Carol (Cate Blanchett), a woman in the midst of a difficult divorce.
Why you should watch: Nominated for a whopping 294 awards (winning 104), rated the British Film Institute’s best LGBTQ+ film of all time, and reportedly receiving a ten-minute standing ovation at its Cannes Film Festival premiere, Carol is widely regarded a modern masterpiece. Again, it’s debatable whether it’s a Christmas film, but as most of the action takes place during the festive season - including Therese and Carol’s first romantic encounter - we’d say a strong yes.

Bridget Jones's Diary
Comedy | Romance | Drama
2001 | Sharon Maguire | 97 mins | 15
Summary:Based on the critically-acclaimed novel, Renée Zellweger stars as Bridget Jones, a thirty-something year old single woman who makes a New Year’s Resolution to write a diary and take control of her life. As her disreputable boss (Hugh Grant) starts making moves on her, Bridget keeps running into a rather annoying old family friend (Colin Firth). Of course, it all comes to a head at Christmas.
Why you should watch: Bridget Jones is a British icon and - despite being American - an Oscar-nominated Zellweger does a fantastic job portraying her painfully relatable yet oddly charming wit on screen. While not specifically a Christmas film, the festive season very much bookends Bridget’s story - ending with an unforgettable kiss in the beautiful snow-covered London of our fantasies.

That Christmas
Animation | Comedy | Family | Fantasy
2024 | Simon Otto | 92 mins
Summary:Based on a trilogy of children's books, this animated fantasy-comedy blends a string of Christmas-themed tales to celebrate the beautiful truth that nothing is worth treasuring more than family and friendship. Expect everything from escaped turkeys to Santa making a massive mistake — it's all in the name of festive fun for all ages.
Why you should watch: It's already been mentioned That Christmas is based on books, but we didn't mention those books were written by Love Actually and Notting Hill writer-director Richard Curtis. He's never failed to bring a smile to audiences, and he's not about to start now. Let's also not overshadow that the director at the helm is Simon Otto, coming in hot with experience on family favourites like the How to Train Your Dragon epics.

Miracle on 34th Street
Fantasy | Drama | Family
1994 | Les Mayfield | 114 mins | U
Summary:The late Richard Attenborough stars as Kris Kringle, ie the Real Santa Claus, alongside Matilda actress Mara Wilson, in this triumphant remake of the hit 1947 film. It tells the story of a Department Store Santa who believes he is the real thing, as he spreads Christmas cheer across New York City and convinces a cynical store director Dorey (Elizabeth Perkins) and her daughter Susan (Wilson) of his authenticity.
Why you should watch: Richard Attenborough is utterly magical as Santa Claus, and then it-girl Mara Wilson is a convincing foil, in this wonderful reworking of a Christmas classic for a new generation of children. This is a loving, well-casted, tribute to the original film that recaptures the magic without trying to beat it.

Meet Me Next Christmas
Romance | Comedy
2024 | Rusty Cundieff | 105 mins
Summary:Singer-actress Christina Milian plays Layla, a young woman who is desperate to get a ticket to the sold out Christmas Eve Pentatonix concert, where she promised to meet a handsome stranger (Kofi Siriboe) the year before. With the help of concierge Teddy (Devale Ellis), Layla faces a hilarious assortment of unfortunate obstacles to grabbing the gig of a lifetime.
Why you should watch: First released in November this year, critics praised the chemistry between the two unlucky-in-love leads, which TheWrap described as “adorable”. Music fans will also enjoy a long cameo from the Grammy-winning acapella group Pentatonix, whose sell out show is at the centre of the plot.

1993 | Henry Selick | 76 mins | PG
Summary:Tim Burton’s gothic animated Christmas tale tells the story of Jack Skellington, the King of Halloween Town, who becomes enamoured with the Christmas holiday and schemes to take it for himself. The voice acting cast includes Chris Sarandon and Catherine O'Hara.
Why you should watch: The Nightmare Before Christmas is visually stunning and endearingly original, which makes it an excellent antidote when one is starting to tire of the sameyness of festive films. Praised by critics and cult audiences alike, Rolling Stone called the film “74 minutes of timeless movie magic”.

The Santa Clause
Fantasy | Drama | Comedy | Family
1994 | John Pasquin | 97 mins | U
Summary:Tim Allen stars as Scott Calvin, a marketing director who unwittingly becomes the new Santa Claus when he is encouraged by his son to try on a red suit left behind by the former Claus. It turns out wearing the suit triggers The Santa Clause, which states he has accepted the job, despite his lack of enthusiasm for it. As Calvin fights his destiny, a physical transformation begins.
Why you should watch: An undoubtedly entertaining premise made all the funnier by Allen’s sardonic deliveries. Somewhat unsurprisingly, the film was a box office smash, sparking two film sequels and a Disney+ series. It even did well during a 2020 re-release during the Covid-19 pandemic where there was a dearth of Christmas films.

Nativity!
Comedy | Family
2009 | Debbie Isitt | 105 mins | U
Summary:In this British comedy classic, Martin Freeman stars as schoolteacher Paul Maddens, who competes with his old drama school rival Gordon Shakespeare (Jason Watkins) to direct the best school Nativity every year - with little success. One year, he fibs to Shakespeare that a Hollywood producer plans to make his latest production into a film, but the lie rapidly spirals out of control.
Why you should watch: This box office hit inspired several sequels and a stage musical that tours every Christmas and has featured celebrity guests such as Louis Walsh, Danny Dyer and Sharon Osbourne. While the film sports some top notch names in Freeman, Watkins and Ashley Jensen, the kids are the real beating heart of this good-natured Christmas classic. Heat magazine summed it up perfectly with: “Outnumbered meets Britain's Got Talent, with added Christmas.”

It's a Wonderful Life
Drama | Family | Fantasy
1946 | Frank Capra | 130 mins | U
Summary:When frustrated businessman George Bailey (James Stewart) seeks to end his life on Christmas Eve, his guardian angel Clarence Odbody (Henry Travers) leaves Heaven to show him what life would be like had he never been born.
Why you should watch: Regularly recognised as not only one of the best Christmas films of all time, but one of the best films of all time, It’s a Wonderful Life is a true classic. While first released in 1946, its central message transcends time and appeals across generations - teaching hope, optimism, and the value of life through the trials of the painfully relatable George Bailey.

A Christmas Carol
Animation | Family | Fantasy
2009 | Robert Zemeckis | 94 mins | PG
Summary:Director Robert Zemeckis (Back to the Future, Forrest Gump) breathes new life into Charles Dickens' timeless classic, bringing to the screen an animated take with the voice of Jim Carrey as Ebenezer Scrooge. Having reached an old age as a bitter moneylender, he is visited by three ghosts determined on Christmas Eve night to show him the error of his ways.
Why you should watch: Only five years before this 2009 gem, Zemeckis proved he could work his seasonal magic with his ambitious adventure film The Polar Express. A Christmas Carol proves it was no fluke, but the real gift of this retread of a literary classic is the one and only Jim Carrey. He was perfect as the Grinch, and he's just as up to the challenge of playing not only Scrooge but the three ghosts too. You can never hear a great story too many times, and if you're not convinced, a supporting cast topped up with Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, and more is the splendid ribbon wrapped around an already fantastic package.

Summary:Ben Stiller stars as a high-flying Chicago property developer about to close the biggest deal of his career, until he receives a devastating call from home. He returns home to rural Ohio to become caregiver for his four rambunctious orphaned nephews, and chaos ensues.
Why you should watch: Multi-award winning actor Stiller is in his comedic element here portraying a fish out of water, but what really sets this film apart is director David Gordon Green’s commitment to authenticity. The four boys are real brothers and the film is set at their family’s ranch, which sets a tone of familiarity that just cannot be otherwise replicated.

Carry-On
Action | Thriller | Mystery
2024 | Jaume Collet-Serra | 119 mins | 15
Summary:Action-thriller starring Taron Egerton as Ethan, an airport security worker who is blackmailed into allowing a suspicious package onto a Christmas Eve flight by a mysterious stranger (Jason Bateman). With international security at risk, Ethan must face down the terrorist threat before it’s too late.
Why you should watch: Egerton more than proved his worth as an action film frontman in the critically acclaimed Kingsman franchise, while Bateman excelled in a criminal role in Ozark. With those two in the lead roles, this has all the makings of a festive action classic. Think Die Hard's younger brother.

The Merry Gentlemen

2024 | Peter Sullivan | 88 mins
Summary:Fired from her job for being too old, Broadway dancer Ashley (Britt Robertson) returns home to discover her local performing arts venue is struggling with mammoth debts. She devises a plan to save the theatre, and Christmas, by enlisting the hunky local carpenter Luke (Chad Michael Murray) to headline an all-male festive strip show.
Why you should watch: Released in November and rising straight to the top of the Netflix streaming charts, Chad Michael Murray’s latest film is a festive Magic Mike set to make the snow melt this festive season. To promote the film, Netflix has already released a shirtless Chad Michael Murray calendar, and it’s a convincing advert for the film.

Last Christmas
Comedy | Romance
2019 | Paul Feig | 102 mins | 12A
Summary:Directed by Paul Feig and co-written by Oscar-winner Emma Thompson, Last Christmas is a tribute to the 1984 Wham! hit of the same name. Emilia Clarke stars as troubled store assistant Kate, who meets the charming homeless shelter volunteer Tom (Henry Golding). The two share a unique connection, but Kate can’t work out why Tom sometimes disappears for days.
Why you should watch: There’s no denying the appetite for Wham!’s hit song, which reached number one in the charts last Christmas, 39 years after its release. While critic reviews for this Christmas adaptation are more mixed, most agree on the excellent performances of the two charismatic leads, with Chicago Sun-Times declaring: “Henry Golding and Emilia Clarke make a charming duo in a sweet love story that rises above the standard, lightweight holiday fare.”

Summary:Embarking on the Christmas adventure of a lifetime, a young boy hops aboard a train taking him and other kids to meet Santa Claus called the Polar Express. Along their journey to the North Pole, he learns the true meaning of friendship, a better gift than any he’ll find under the tree.
Why you should watch: The movie was mind-blowing at the time for its use of both live-action and motion capture to bring the characters and world to life. Performances from the likes of Tom Hanks help sprinkle a little extra magic over this 2004 instant classic. It wouldn’t be December without taking a seat amongst the train’s cosy carriages. This is a perfect winter warmer to keep everybody happy.

Our Little Secret

2024 | Stephen Herek | 99 mins

Unluckily, it turns out that she and her ex’s new partners are siblings, so an awkward time ensues as they spend the holidays under the same roof. They attempt to keep their past romances under wraps, but how long until the truth comes out?
Why you should watch: Much-loved for her performances in Mean Girls and the 2022 Netflix cheese-fest Falling for Christmas, it’s great seeing Lindsay back and having a blast in a rom-com. The movie doubles as an unexpected mini-Mean Girls reunion of sorts too, with Tim Meadows (he played the headteacher in the 2004 cult favourite) also part of the cast. Promising plenty of hilariously cringe-inducing moments, a future festive staple may be on the cards.

Candy Cane Lane
Comedy | Fantasy | Family
2023 | Reginald Hudlin | 117 mins | 12A
Summary:Eddie Murphy stars as Chris Carver, a freshly fired corporate marketer with dreams of winning the neighbourhood Christmas decorations contest. However, it turns out the elf is as mischievous as they come, wreaking havoc in the town. Lights aside, it’s now Chris’ time to shine and save the day.
Why you should watch: Accompanied by a stand-out supporting cast that includes Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation) and Tracee Ellis Ross (Girlfriends), it’s seeing Eddie flex his comedic muscles once again that’s a treat you can’t afford to skip. Fusing in a playful fantasy element, it’s a wild ride big on laughs the entire family can kick back with. Hitting Prime Video in 2023, it’s a pick-me-up of a film yet to arrive on many’s radar, so here’s to fixing that!

Hot Frosty
Romance | Comedy
2024 | Jerry Ciccoritti | 90 mins | PG

When Kathy (Chabert) offers a handsome snow sculpture her lucky red scarf, she is shocked the next day to discover a bemused - and now human - man wandering around in its place.
Why you should watch: The summary alone might make this one worth trying, but if not rest assured that Hot Frosty is far from a hot mess, according to critics. At the time of writing, it is rated 85% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, with compliments to its silly premise, comedy and Christmas spirit. In the words of the Guardian: “It’s a sincerely stupid idea executed sincerely.”

How the Grinch Stole Christmas
Family | Comedy | Fantasy
2000 | Ron Howard | 104 mins | PG

After an encounter with a young girl named Cindy Lou Who (Taylor Momsen), he’s compelled to get into the Christmas spirit and return to town for the first time in years. But after unsuccessfully mixing with the Whos, he’s determined to ruin the day for all, not just himself.
Why you should watch: Based on one of beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss' most championed books, this 2000 blockbuster from director Ron Howard is generally considered the best adaptation, even though the critics weren’t too keen. Established as one of the biggest stars of the ‘90s thanks to efforts like Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and Dumb and Dumber, Jim was perfectly cast in the role of cinema’s ultimate grump. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry… well, cry laughing.

Bad Santa
Drama | Comedy | Crime
2003 | Terry Zwigoff | 92 mins | 15
Summary:Willie T. Soke (Billy Bob Thornton) and his not-so-trusted assistant Marcus Skidmore (Tony Cox) are shameless thieves, dressing as Santa and his elf to rob a shopping mall. Their department store jobs are the perfect cover and the ideal in, but a spanner is caught in the works when Willie strikes an unexpected friendship with a young bullying victim who believes he’s the real deal.
Why you should watch: If traditional Christmas content is starting to get a little sickly, Bad Santa is your perfect, foul-mouthed antidote. It’s the rarest of beasts: that Christmas classic just for adults so good you have to rewatch it annually. Billy had been nominated for two acting Oscars before he donned the Santa suit in this tinsel-strewn romp, but many fans would argue he’s never been better than he is here, embracing his rudest, crudest side.

Why you should watch: The Muppets’ take on Charles Dickens’ iconic Christmas story is one of its best adaptations. The Muppets capture the heartwarming and emotional tone perfectly, while also adding some catchy original tunes. The legendary Michael Caine makes a memorable Scrooge, hilarious in his indifference but later truly haunted by the Ghosts.

Miracle on 34th Street
Comedy | Drama | Family
1947 | George Seaton | 96 mins | U
Summary:In Macy's New York City store on 34th Street, there works an old man named Kris Kringle. Not only is he the store’s resident Santa Claus, but he believes he’s the real Father Christmas. When he’s accused of being mad, a young girl, her mother, and a lawyer step in to defend him from being institutionalised. With naysayers insisting magic is a total fabrication, can he possibly win the case?
Why you should watch: Although it’s been remade multiple times, sometimes you can’t beat the original. The 1947 crowdpleaser boasts a soaring 96% on the review site Rotten Tomatoes, and if that’s not enough, it won three Academy Awards in the Best Actor in a Supporting Role, Best Writing for Original Story, and Best Writing for Screenplay categories. Not only is it a great Christmas movie, it’s perhaps the Christmas movie. Even with hard competition from It’s a Wonderful Life, there’s a strong argument to be made.

Love Actually
Comedy | Romance | Drama
2003 | Richard Curtis | 135 mins | 15

An all-star cast includes Hugh Grant, Liam Neeson, Colin Firth, Laura Linney, Emma Thompson, Alan Rickman, Keira Knightley, Martine McCutcheon, Bill Nighy and Rowan Atkinson.
Why you should watch: While some stories have dated faster than others, the big moments in this Christmas classic still hit perfectly: Hugh Grant’s iconic dance, Colin Firth’s Portuguese proposal, Emma Thompson’s painful Christmas realisation and Thomas Brodie-Sangster’s optimistic young love. The film’s big strength is exploring many types of love, and thus being open to pain, which makes it such a rollercoaster of emotions. That, and the idea of a Prime Minister who everyone likes.

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation
Comedy
1989 | Jeremiah S. Chechik | 97 mins | 12
Summary:Christmas doesn't start until Clark Griswold picks out a great big one. Bursting with memorable gags, this 1989 comedy stars Chevy Chase as a family man trying to provide the best December 25 yet. His disasters are the audience's delight, with decorative lights, animal catastrophes, and everything in between standing in his way.
Why you should watch: Chevy and the team had already lit cinematic dynamite with the previous National Lampoon films, but none beg for repeat viewing like this one. The acting legend has never been funnier, the outlandish jokes executed perfectly. It often features high on 'Best Christmas movies ever' lists, and any spot below the top five is frankly too low. Written by John Hughes (Ferris Bueller's Day Off, The Breakfast Club), it's yet another '80s masterpiece from one of the geniuses who defined that decade. If you're looking for a movie to bring the family together or just to kick back with solo, you can perhaps do no better.

Home Alone
Comedy | Family
1990 | Chris Columbus | 103 mins | PG
Summary:Released in 1990, Home Alone stars a young Macaulay Culkin as Kevin, an eight-year-old mistakenly left behind when his family heads off for a festive holiday. His childish fantasy soon becomes a nightmare when his home is targeted by the ‘Wet Bandits’, a duo of mismatched burglars. As they hatch their plan to rob the McCallister household, Kevin cooks up a plan of his own: to fight back.
Why you should watch: Macaulay as Kevin remains one of the greatest child performances of all time, let alone the ‘90s. Joe Pesci (Goodfellas) and Daniel Stern (The Wonder Years) are just as iconic as the crooks he’s up against. Even with moments to make audiences wince no matter how many times they’ve seen the film, Home Alone is full of heart with a touching message fans are always happy to be reminded of each year.

Elf
Comedy | Family | Fantasy
2003 | Jon Favreau | 97 mins | PG
Summary:Will Ferrell plays Buddy, a human who has been raised by Santa’s elves in the North Pole. After never really fitting in with his pint-sized peers, Santa grants him leave to travel to New York in search of his real father.
Why you should watch: It’s hard not to root for Buddy, whose childlike playfulness and optimism is a joy to watch. Much of the film’s humour comes from his fish out of water situation, as he deals with the harsh realities of regular humans, including his Scrooge-esque father (James Caan). Ultimately, however, this is a heartwarming crowd pleaser celebrating family at Christmas.

2024 | Peter Chelsom | 92 mins | 12

Why you should watch: Danny DeVito’s comic timing is legendary, but he’s not the only comedian in a starring role - his real life daughter Lucy plays on-screen daughter Abbie, while That '70s Show star Wilmer Valderrama is also in the mix. Despite being set in sunny Italy in August, this hits all the holiday beats, and Screen Rant called it a “modern and unique Christmas hit”.

Why you should watch: Three-time British Comedy Award winner Lee Mack rarely misses. He’s been a team captain on BBC One panel show Would I Lie To You since 2007, and his series Not Going Out is currently the UK’s second-longest running sitcom. Alongside him, fellow funnyman Chris McCausland is everyone’s man of the moment, given his increasingly impressive performances on Strictly Come Dancing.

Spirited
Comedy
2022 | Sean Anders | 127 mins | 12A
Summary:Blockbuster juggernauts Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool) and Will Ferrell (Step Brothers) team up for Spirited, a musical comedy which yet again reinvents Charles Dickens' undying classic A Christmas Carol. Ryan plays Clint Briggs, a supposedly "unredeemable" media consultant who the ghosts feel is a lost cause. But it just so happens that Scrooge (Ferrell) is the ghost of Christmas Present, and as he was given the same diagnosis many years ago, he believes he's up to the task of turning things around for Clint.
Why you should watch: A Christmas Carol has been revisited time and time again, but who better to fire a fresh spark into the mix than two of Hollywood's absolute finest. You've never heard jokes like these in an adaptation before, and the musical sequences help make this a resounding holiday hit. The Daily Express wrote "the film's offbeat charms are hard to resist" in its favourable review, and deciding to indulge is one of the guilt-free joys of the festive period. Dig in.

Summary:Two women experiencing heartbreak on opposite sides of the Atlantic Ocean, Iris (Kate Winslet) and Amanda (Cameron Diaz), decide to escape their woes by swapping homes for the festive season. Despite initial setbacks, each woman finds exactly what she is looking for.
Why you should watch: A true classic of both the romcom and Christmas genres, Winslet and Diaz are perfectly cast, as are their co-stars Jude Law and Jack Black. The script is funny, warm and comforting. The plot is pitch perfect - who can’t relate to wanting a fantasy Christmas away from their troubles? Of course, it doesn’t hurt that Iris and Amanda are both the owners of some truly gorgeous homes.
