Death in Paradise series 14: Final episode confirmed Selwyn's departure & Mervin's secret brother
By Helen Fear | Sat Mar 29 2025Death in Paradise series 14 has come to a bittersweet ending, finally resolving some of the big questions that dominated the show's recent run - including whether Commissioner Selwyn Patterson would be leaving, and if DI Mervin Wilson might stay.
And it's good news and bad news for fans of the popular BBC One show, with one beloved character making the decision to depart.
So what happened in the series finale of the detective drama, and what's the future for the show? Here's everything you need to know about the Death in Paradise ending, and who is leaving.
***Warning: spoilers from the Death in Paradise season 14 finale ahead***

Is Commissioner Selwyn Patterson leaving Saint Marie?
Death in Paradise fans will know that series 14 introduced new Detective Inspector Mervin Wilson, but it also threatened to take away beloved character Commissioner Selwyn Patterson.
During the latest run, Selwyn's future looked uncertain. In unsettling scenes, the Saint Marie Police Commissioner was told his job was being "phased out", due to job cuts and lack of money.
In Death in Paradise episode six, Selwyn's replacement - the unbearably smug Sterling Fox, played by Trieve Blackwood-Cambridge - arrived in Saint Marie, although thankfully he didn't last long!
In the Death in Paradise series 14 finale, Commissioner Selwyn Patterson revealed he had been asked back permanently. But, alas, he refused. After 51 years working for the Saint Marie police department, Selwyn left in a taxi.
What happened in the season finale of Death in Paradise?
In episode eight of the season 14, Selwyn went to Jamaica after being summoned by the chief. On his return to Saint Marie, he said the meeting "went well". He told Mervin and Catherine that "they've offered me my job back".
However, Selwyn subsequently told Catherine that he'd decided NOT to accept the offer. He said: "It felt wrong to say yes. Too much has happened. And, right now, I can't see a way to get back to how things were."
He told his friend that he would go and see his daughter Andrina, and after that "who knows".
In emotional scenes, Catherine asked Selwyn to promise that "this isn't farewell but au revoir".

Is Don Warrington leaving Death in Paradise?
Don Warrington has not yet confirmed if he's leaving Death in Paradise. Although we assume his exit has been kept hush hush. If his character Commissioner Selwyn Patterson has made the decision to leave Saint Marie police department, it seems Don Warrington is no longer a cast member.
Although we'd be surprised if we didn't see him again in the future, even as an occasional visitor to the island. After all, they didn't kill the character off.
The actor, 73, has played Commissioner Selwyn Patterson ever since Death in Paradise started in 2011.
Selwyn has seen many staff come and go, not least the main detectives - Ben Miller's DI Richard Poole, Kris Marshall's DI Humphrey Goodman, Ardal O'Hanlon's DI Jack Mooney, and Ralf Little's DI Neville Parker.
Is DI Mervin Wilson staying in Saint Marie?
The short answer is YES! Of course he is! Although Don Gilet's character DI Mervin Wilson spent most of the Death in Paradise series 14 finale trying to leave, he received bombshell news in the closing minutes of the episode.
Despite Mervin saying "short of a hurricane, there's nothing stopping me from leaving", it was clear that he was going nowhere. Although it wasn't a storm that stopped him, it was some important family news.
In a heart to heart with Selwyn, the Commissioner asked Mervin to reconsider his decision to go back to London. He said: "I think you are not at the end of your journey, but at the beginning."
Of course, fans of the show know that Mervin first arrived on the island to find his estranged mum Dorna Bray. However, he discovered that she had died in mysterious circumstances, and set about trying to solve her murder.
At the end of the episode, Mervin discovered that he had another family member he knew nothing about.

Who is DI Mervin Wilson's brother?
In episode 8 of Death in Paradise series 14, Mervin visited his mum's grave, only to discover that someone else had been to the cemetery to pay their respects, too. A card signed by a mysterious S read: "Rest in peace."
Mervin discovered that 'S' stood for Solomon Clark, an ex-pupil of his mum's who lives in Antigua.
However, Selwyn had more news to give. He told Mervin: "Solomon is your brother."
Of course, this is great news for Death in Paradise fans. Not only does it mean the introduction of a new character, but it also means that Don Gilet's character DI Mervin Wilson is sticking around for at least another series.
The actor confirmed as much earlier this year when he revealed he'd be back filming in Guadalope for series 15.
