With nearly all of the 297 beds in St Mary's hospital occupied, the staff must discharge patients before anyone else can be admitted. Sixty-year-old Peter Lai arrives for a lifesaving operation, but unless the staff can clear a bed for him, his operation will not go ahead. Elsewhere, a 91-year old woman waits three weeks for a place in a rehabilitation centre after breaking her ankle, and a homeless Polish man cannot be discharged from the hospital without the assistance of a translator
