Italy narrowly missed out on a historic victory at Stade Pierre-Mauroy in Lille last year when Paolo Garbisi's injury-time penalty hit the post after the ball fell off the tee and resulted in a rushed attempt to beat the shot clock, and the encounter ended in a 13-13 draw. The previous meeting in Rome two years ago also appeared to be going in favour of the Azzurri as they led 24-22 in the second half, only for a Matthieu Jalibert try to dash their hopes in a 29-24 loss.
