What happened in The Hardacres series 1 ending?
The series finale of the sweeping family saga saw the Hardacre family set things right after an unexpected bombshell landed.
The sixth and final episode saw Mary (Claire Cooper) have a heart to heart with Liza about the pills she had been taking. After a painful moment of reflection, Mary found the confidence to go to the snobby Fitzherberts’ and confront Emma to give her some home truths.
Having learnt that Lady Emma had given Liza the pills that made her sick, Mary called her a “nasty piece of work”. She declared that she wasn’t ashamed of her past, but rather proud of where she’d come from. Long story short, she put the snooty cow Emma in her place – and not before time.
Adella, inspired by Mary’s words and the way in which she defended Liza, appealed to her mother to call off the marriage to Lord Hugo. But, when Emma refused, Adella took matters into her own hands. Although her attempts to run off with Joe didn’t work out for her, she did not end up marrying Hugo either after her rather lovely dad Lord George Fitzherbert took pity on her.

The Hardacres series 1 recap: Pregnant Betsy and Joe married
In the final episode of The Hardcares series 1, docks worker Betsy dropped an unexpected bombshell. She revealed she was pregnant with Joe’s child. Although Joe cruelly called their fling “a mistake”, the family subsequently insisted that they marry. He agreed, despite the fact he wasn’t in love with her.
Of course, viewers knew that Joe’s heart lay with Adella and he briefly considered running off with her to America. But he did the right thing in the end (after a heart to heart with his dad). At the end of series 1, Joe married Betsy.
Meanwhile, when Mary discovered Mrs Dryden had been hiding the Cavendish antiques for safekeeping, she fired her. But when she discovered that Mrs Dryden had been unexpectedly kind to Betsy, she had a change of heart. Mary gave Mrs Dryden her job back after it became apparent that she once was forced to give up a child.
Lastly, Harry returned home from boarding school claiming to be having a great time. But we got a sense that all was not right… Is Harry being bullied? Series 2 will reveal all.
What will happen in series 2 of The Hardacres?
Series 2 of The Hardacres is about to land on Channel 5… Series 1 followed the Hardacre family as they navigated their rise from poverty to staggering wealth – and the unexpected twists and turns that money brought.
Series 2 follows the likeable family on the brink of transformation in 1895. Modernity sweeps into Hardacre Hall with electricity, but there’s also shifting loyalties. Mary and Sam embrace wealth and opportunity, but their children begin forging identities that challenge expectations.
Mary champions adult education for dock workers, while Sam expands the family business amid a looming recession, uncertain if Joe is ready to succeed him. Determined to prove himself, Joe’s impulsive choices threaten his future – and ultimately the future of his whole family.
Liza is swept up by a chance encounter with a handsome stranger, while Harry’s plans to abandon school are transformed by an inspiring new tutor.
And there’s another, less welcome new character. Emma’s mother, Lady Imelda Hansen, arrives at the Fitzherbert’s home with a dangerous agenda, forcing the Hardacres to unite or risk losing everything.
