Helen Fear | 11:46am Fri 20 Jun | Updated 3:42pm Fri 20 JunThe Assassin promises to be THE next big thriller coming soon to Amazon Prime Video and, with Keeley Hawes in the cast, we can guarantee it’s going to be worth watching.
The ever-reliable Keeley portrays a retired assassin who, you’ve guessed it, is dragged back into a world of danger when her “past catches up with her”.
The upcoming series follows the recent successes of Black Doves on Netflix, The Agency on Paramount+, and Day of the Jackal on Sky Atlantic – all focusing on trained killers/spies and all brilliant in their own way.
So how is Prime Video’s The Assassin different, what’s the plot, and who is in the cast? Here’s everything you need to know…

What is the plot of The Assassin on Amazon Prime Video?
The Assassin introduces us to Julie, a retired hit-woman living a secluded life on a remote Greek island. However, her quiet existence is interrupted by the arrival of her estranged son, Edward, from England… The pair have a somewhat thorny reunion.
We’re told: “Armed with questions around new information on his paternity, Edward battles to find the right time to speak to his frustratingly distant mother. But, when the moment finally presents itself, things take a deadly turn. Julie’s dangerous past catches up with her and they are forced to flee the island and go on the run together.”
As the series continues, Edward’s quest for truth clashes with Julie’s secrecy. Meanwhile, they are forced to work together in a fight for survival, testing their dysfunctional relationship to its limits.
The synopsis reads: “Amid uncovering a dark conspiracy they believe to be their only threat, a greater danger emerges that will destroy their relationship entirely. In a race against time, Julie fights to save Edward and salvage their relationship as past and present collide in a showdown across the globe”
Sounds epic!

How many episodes is it?
The Assassin will be six episodes of roughly an hour each.
While Prime Video occasionally drops episodes weekly, they usually – if we’re lucky – deliver an entire series in one go.
Here’s hoping this one is a binger.

Who is in the cast of The Assassin on Amazon Prime Video?
Trust us when we tell you the cast of The Assassin is exceptional, with some of our absolute favourite actors.
Keeley Hawes, undoubtedly one of the UK’s most bankable TV stars, leads the cast as retired assassin Julie. She recently did something very different in Miss Austen on BBC One, but is also famous for playing Kitty Butler in Tipping the Velvet, Zoe Reynolds in Spooks, and DI Alex Drake in Ashes to Ashes.
Her role as a matriarch in ITV comedy-drama The Durrells was also a hit with viewers. Of course, Line of Duty fans will know Keeley as DI Lindsay Denton.
Freddie Highmore stars as her son Freddie. The actor looks 12, but is actually 33! The former child star is probably best known for playing Norman Bates in Bates Motel, and Dr. Shaun Murphy in The Good Doctor.
American actress and singer Gina Gershon – of Snoops, and The Cleaners fame – will play Marie, opposite The Tourist actress Shalom Brune-Franklin.
This Life’s Jack Davenport plays Sean, while Neighbour’s legend Alan Dale stars as Aaron Cross. Love Rat‘s Gerald Kyd plays Luca, and Cursed’s Devon Terrell stars as Ezra. Blue Lights‘ Richard Dormer, and The Ipcress File’s David Dencik also star.

Where was The Assassin filmed?
The Assassin was filmed in various locations in Greece, including Athens. Much of the series is set on an idyllic island.
Filming began in August 2024, so it must have been very hot!
Talking about filming in Greece, Keeley said: “I feel so lucky to have spent the summer in Athens with the wonderful Freddie Highmore and surrounded by a cast and crew of such high calibre.”

Who wrote it?
The series comes from brothers Harry and Jack Williams, who helm the Two Brothers Pictures production company.
They are behind twisty TV series such as Boat Story, Dinosaur, Baptiste, The Missing, and The Tourist.
Speaking about the series, Keeley said: “Bringing Jack and Harrys spectacular scripts to life was an absolute joy – going to work has never been so much fun. I hope everyone enjoys The Assassin as much as we did.”
Freddie Highmore added: “It doesn’t get better than a Greek adventure alongside the lovely and incomparable Keeley Hawes! I’m really excited for people to glimpse some of what we’ve been up to.”
