What is the plot of Reunion on BBC One?

BBC thriller Reunion introduces Daniel Brennan, a deaf man "determined to right his wrongs" while unravelling the truth behind the events that led him to prison.

A synopsis from the channel tells us: "Brennan embodies the struggle of a man caught between two worlds, unable to fully integrate into the hearing world and shunned by his closest friends and the wider deaf community following his heinous crime.

"Amidst this isolation, Brennan's only meaningful relationship is with his estranged daughter Carly, who he has not had any contact with since his arrest over a decade ago.

Is Matthew Gurney deaf?

Actor Matthew Gurney is a deaf actor, known for playing Adam in Switch, a British signed soap opera, following the lives of deaf people.

He won the Best Actor award at Deaffest 2017 for his role of Mitch the plumber in the deaf sitcom Small World.

On stage, the Oxford-born actor portrayed Berowne in the production of Love's Labour's Lost (performed in British Sign Language).

Reunion is a bilingual series which features both British Sign Language (BSL) and spoken English.

Talking about the series, Matthew Gurney said: "Reunion is an amazing storyline and is completely different from my previous work. My character Brennan is on a wildly different journey than that portrayed by normal deaf lives, this portrays a man who is hated within the deaf community."

He added: "It shows how deaf people react and act on screen in an honest and authentic way. We are different to hearing actors, we are so much more visual storytellers. It's not about relying on sound, it’s about using your eyes and seeing what is going on in the story."

How many episodes is it? When's the start date?

BBC One's Reunion will be four parts of one hour long.

The channel has confirmed the start date of the new thriller will be Monday, April 7, 2025 at 9pm. Episode two will air the next night. Viewers will have to wait a week to watch episodes 3 and 4, which will air on Monday and Tuesday of the subsequent week.

All four episodes will stream as a box set on BBC iPlayer from 6am on that first date, similarly to The City is Ours, and Ten Pound Poms.

Who is in the cast of Reunion on BBC One?

Deaf actor Matthew Gurney plays former convict Daniel Brennan. This is arguably his first leading role in a primetime show on the BBC.

Anne-Marie Duff portrays Christine in the cast of Reunion. Christine is desperate to find Brennan and get to the full truth behind what he did.

The actress is famous for playing Grace Williams in Bad Sisters, Susannah in Suspect, and Erin Wiley in Sex Education. Shameless fans will know her best as Fiona Gallagher.

The ever-brilliant Eddie Marsan stars as Stephen Renworth, Christine's protective boyfriend. Eddie played John Darwin in The Thief, His Wife and the Canoe, Terry in Ray Donovan, and Mr Norrell in Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell.

Meanwhile, former EastEnders actress Rose Ayling-Ellis plays Christine's daughter Miri. She recently starred in the brilliant crime series Ludwig, and will soon appear in Code of Silence in a "groundbreaking role".

Lara Peake plays Daniel's estranged daughter Carly. She recently portrayed Daysee Butler in the cast of Rivals on Disney+.

Talking about the series, Lara said: "There's so much in Reunion that people can relate to, from the relationships and storyline to what it feels like to be isolated from a community and welcomed into a community.

"To be able to watch a show that is led by deaf actors is incredible and the inclusion of sign language is not seen often enough. It's a real opportunity to learn and become fascinated and immersed in that world."

Where is it set and filmed?

Reunion was filmed in and around Sheffield. The series was produced by Sheffield-based Warp Films for BBC iPlayer and BBC One.

The first-look pictures show the cast set against the striking landscape of Sheffield and the Peak District.

Lead writer, creator, and executive producer William Mager explained: "What I wanted to do was write a love letter to my hometown, Sheffield. To show those amazing locations that I remember from my childhood, but also show that there's a strong deaf community here in Sheffield.

"We've used a lot of deaf people who live and work here as part of Reunion, which was important for me. I grew up here and I lived here for 22 years. One thing I always loved about Sheffield was the contrast. The centre of town has lots of old buildings from the industrial past, the steel industry, and then five minutes' drive out of the centre and you're in the countryside, it's beautiful."

Actor Eddie Marsan, who plays Stephen Renworth, added: "I enjoy filming in Yorkshire. I love Sheffield as a town. Me and Anne-Marie [Duff] had a scene outside Sheffield City Hall, opposite a Wetherspoons with numerous hen parties, which was an experience, but it was great fun as well. There's an incredible generosity of spirit here, it's not pretentious in any way."

Meanwhile, executive producer Mark Herbert said: "One of the things that was amazing in this production was that it's not just showing the grimy bits of Sheffield that are often shown on TV. It's actually showing the beauty in the Peak District."

What is the title theme tune of Reunion?

The theme tune at the beginning and end of BBC One's Reunion is an original song by Richard Hawley.

Sheffield-born Richard Hawley is an English singer-songwriter, guitarist, and producer. A part of Britpop band Longpigs in the 90s, before briefly joining Pulp, Richard has subsequently worked with artists including Arctic Monkeys, Elbow, Paul Weller, Manic Street Preachers, and Jarvis Cocker.

As a solo artist, he has released nine studio albums, and has been nominated for the Mercury prize (twice) and a Brit Award.

The lyrics of the Reunion theme tune include the lines: "Ten years in here

No-one near

No-one to sign my name

Nowhere to hide my shame

One day soon I’ll be forgiven

Even though I don’t know what I’ve done

Some say there’s no use in trying

To be free under the sun."

What is a sign name?

Actress Rose Ayling-Ellis explains what a sign name is, something referred to in Reunion on BBC One.

She said: "In the deaf community, we have a thing called a sign name which is similar to a hearing word, a nickname. Rather than us spending time spelling everyone's name, we have a sign name that becomes quite personal. So, mine is Rose, because it's a flower, and it's got a bit of thorn. It's very particular and personal to each person."

Lara Peake added: "My sign name is [she takes her middle three fingers and does a scratching motion on her shoulder] because Duffy said that I sign slow like a sloth. What you will find is a lot of deaf humour is a lot of playful teasing and banter."

Actress Ane-Marie Duff explained: "Rose gave me a sign name and sign names are magical because they're all about your essence and who you are and so it's much more interesting than just getting a nickname. It's kind of a name you earn, which is very interesting.

"So, my sign name is this [she holds a fist over her chest with her thumb moving up and down in a ‘beating’ motion] and the reason that it's over my heart is because, according to Rose, I am kind, and I always call everybody baby."

Stephen Renworth actor Eddie Marsan said: "Everyone has a sign name, and my sign name means 'The Best'. And I said, 'Does that mean I'm the best?' And someone said, 'No, it means you think you're the best!'

Lastly creator William Mager explained: "A sign name is given to you by members of the deaf community, friends and peers. It's not always the name that you want to be given, but it's based on a very personal trait this could be physical, or personality-based. Sometimes it's the name you have to accept. My sign name means piano man.

"Over 20 years ago, I was on a Channel 4 documentary about a deaf man playing the piano. The next day I went to a deaf pub, and everyone was pointing at me and said, 'Look, it's the Piano Man', and that was it, it has stuck with me ever since."
