By Helen Fear | Fri Mar 21 2025Malpractice, the acclaimed ITV thriller from 2023, is returning this year with a new cast and a new story - here's everything you need to know.
ITV has released a selection of first-look images ahead of its release date, which is expected any day now.
This time, Helen Behan and Jordan Kouamé return as Dr. Norma Callahan and Dr. George Adjei of the Medical Investigation Unit (MIU). They are, once again, called in to investigate a doctor accused of malpractice.
Here's what we know about the upcoming series 2 of Malpractice, including plot, cast changes, and start date...

Is there a series 2 of Malpractice?
Yep, there's great news for those of you who enjoyed the first series of Malpractice in 2023. The anthology series is coming back, with a different doctor accused of malpractice.
Series 1 of the nail-biting thriller followed fiercely intelligent and hard working A&E doctor Lucinda Edwards who was faced with an accusation of malpractice.
On the heels of TV dramas like Maternal and This Is Going to Hurt, viewers followed Lucinda as she endured a nightmare shift, which ended up having horrifying consequences for both her – and a patient.
Niamh Algar portrayed Dr Lucinda Edwards in the cast of Malpractice series 1, but she will not be back in series 2. Lucinda's fate was left uncertain at the end of Malpractice, as the tribunal verdict was not shown.
What is the plot of Malpractice series 2?
The second run is once again written and created by Grace Ofori-Attah, who was a doctor for 15 years, before she swapped medicine for storytelling.
The new series sees the return of Helen Behan and Jordan Kouamé as Dr. Norma Callahan and Dr. George Adjei of the Medical Investigation Unit (MIU). They are called in to investigate when another doctor is accused of malpractice.
When on-call psychiatric registrar Dr James Ford finds himself caught between an anxious new mother's postnatal check-up and the sectioning of a psychotic patient, there is subsequently a very tragic outcome.
The synopsis from ITV tell us: "Norma Callahan and George Adjei of the MIU are called in to investigate Dr Ford's actions. His personal life is messy and his colleagues may find him arrogant, but Dr Ford appears committed to his vulnerable patients.
"Yet what appears to be a series of bad choices by one doctor spreads beyond the psychiatric unit to a hospital seemingly at war with itself. Is Dr Ford a doctor with a God complex, or a victim himself?"
With the investigation closing in, can Dr Ford save his already fragile career from a string of apparently damning mistakes? And can the MIU uncover the truth of what happened despite fierce opposition from all sides?

When is the start date?
Although ITV has not yet confirmed a start date for Malpractice series 2, they have revealed that it will return in spring 2025. It will air on ITV1 and ITVX.
By our reckoning, that is any day now. Watch this space for more info.
Who's in the cast?
The new series sees the return of Helen Behan as Dr. Norma Callahan of the Medical Investigation Unit (MIU). Actress Helen is perhaps best known for playing Anna in The Virtues opposite Stephen Graham.
Jordan Kouamé also reprises his role of Dr. George Adjei, who works alongside Dr. Norma Callahan. The actor is currently playing Reggie Regbo in Dope Girls, and also starred as Martin The Gaoler in Wolf Hall.
Tom Hughes joins the cast as psychiatric registrar Dr James Ford, who finds himself on the wrong end of a malpractice claim. Actor Tom is best known for playing Albert in Victoria, and Thomas Trafford in The English.
Speaking about the series, Tom said: "I couldn't be more delighted to be playing James and helping bring to life Grace's pertinent and important piece [of writing], which stopped me in my tracks when I read it. I hope the audience, when they see it, are equally as gripped and engaged by it, as I was."
Joining Tom in Malpractice series 2 is Am I Being Unreasonable? star Selin Hizli, Silent Witness' Zoe Telford, and Protection's Ace Bhatti.
Blue Lights star Hannah McClean, Top Boy's Seraphina Beh, and Happy Valley's Rick Warden also appear in the cast of Malpractice series 2.

Is Malpractice any good?
Malpractice was arguably one of the best ITV thrillers of 2023, with an amazing performance by Irish actress Niamh Algar.
Series one - which was shot on location in Belfast - had the most watched launch episode of a new drama on ITV1 in 2023 with 6.7m viewers.
The Daily Telegraph described it as "worth making an appointment with", while The Guardian said: "Intricately plotted and beautifully, leanly written by Grace Ofori-Attah."
The Times said: "Terrific, a fast-paced, multi-layered and, praise be, believable thriller."
Lastly, Evening Standard added: "A breakneck thriller that leaves your head spinning even as you're watching it."
