Girlbands Forever: BBC's 'nostalgic' documentary to feature 90s stars All Saints, Eternal and Atomic Kitten
Natasha Rigler | 4:27pm Wed 17 Sep | Updated 4:28pm Wed 17 SepGirlbands Forever is a new “nostalgic” BBC documentary starring some of the most iconic female groups of the 90s.
Band members from All Saints, Eternal and Atomic Kitten will all appear in the mini-series and talk about the highs and lows of fame – and the impact it all had on their lives.
Girlbands Forever is a spin-off from last year’s Boybands Forever, which was masterminded by documentary maker Louis Theroux. The show gave a very shocking and raw insight into life as a 90s boybander.
Louis, who is executive producer on Girlbands Forever, says the show does uncover “pain behind the music”, alongside the positives that come with riding at the top of the charts.
He says: “I well remember when the Spice Girls, Eternal and All Saints burst on the scene in the 90s. It was a special time in pop music and British culture generally.
“Then in their wake came a parade of girl bands, made up of girls who were all in different ways beautiful, talented and often very funny. Going back and rediscovering all that music and those videos and the interviews they did has been an absolute pleasure.
“There was pain behind the music, too, and as is so often the case there was price to be paid for that level of young fame. But mainly we wanted this to be a celebration of a time of very special music and talent.”
Girlbands Forever on the BBC: Who’s in it?
Girlbands Forever will take you on a journey down memory lane. The documentary will feature interviews with members of All Saints, Atomic Kitten and Eternal. Singers from Mis-Teeq and Sugababes will also be on hand to tell their stories.
Melanie Blatt will be representing All Saints, while Kelle Bryan will recall her experiences in Eternal. Heidi Range, who was one of many members of Sugababes, will also appear, along with Mis-Teeq’s Su-Elise Nash.
But the former pop star who is likely to have the most interesting story to tell is Kerry Katona. Kerry was just 18 when she was thrust into the limelight in Atomic Kitten. The often turbulent times in her life have been played out in the media ever since.
A surprise star who will also be talking about the price of fame in a girlband is Perrie Edwards. Perrie found fame on The X Factor aged 17 and was picked for a new girlband on the show; Little Mix. Little Mix went on to win the 2011 series.
But although Perrie isn’t a 90s star, her experiences are likely to be similar to those who were famous during this era. Perrie has already spoken openly about the “dark side” of public scrutiny and her own battle with anxiety and panic attacks.
Music industry moguls
Like Boybands Forever – which featured both Robbie Williams and Take That’s manager Nigel Martin-Smith – Girlbands Forever will also hear from music industry moguls.
Giving their take will be record label giants, managers, journalists and pop music experts. They include Nicki Chapman, former creative director of the Spice Girls and S Club 7. Nicki, who’s spent her career working for record labels and management companies, was also a judge on ITV‘s Popstars and Popstars: The Rivals at the turn of the millennium.
Pop record producer Pete Waterman, who worked with Nicki on Popstars, will also give his thoughts, along with former chief executive of Island Records, Darcus Beese OBE.
Atomic Kitten’s founder Andy McCluskey will feature, along with Perrie’s X Factor mentor and former N-Dubz star, Tulisa Contostavlos. Girlbands Forever will also hear from showbiz journalist Lucie Cave and DJs Scott Mills, Clara Amfo and Pete Tong. Singer and record producer MNEK, who is a Grammy and Brit winner, will appear.
Boybands Forever featured a bitter clash between Take That’s Robbie and Nigel Martin-Smith. Will we see the same in Girlbands Forever?
When does BBC’s Girlbands Forever start? How many episodes?
Girlbands Forever is a three-episode mini series. Each episode will last an hour. This is the identical format as its predecessor, Boybands Forever.
Girlbands Forever will air on BBC Two. Unfortunately, the BBC is yet to confirm a start date. Let’s hope we don’t have long to wait!
