Gavin & Stacey's 9 most iconic moments - from Nessa's proposal to Smithy's curry order

By Robert Emlyn Slater

The Gavin & Stacey Christmas special this year will be 100% bittersweet, for it's the last ever episode of the beloved show that's delivered the most iconic of TV moments over the years.

Ahead of Gavin & Stacey: the Finale, let's remind ourselves of some of the finest bits from the Barry and Billericay crew.

Gavin and Stacey's most iconic moments: Nessa's pregnancy reveal

In series one, Nessa found out that she was pregnant. To make matters worse for the Welsh legend, Smithy was the father.

She didn't tell the unsuspecting plumber until the final few minutes of the first episode of season two.

Following Gavin and Stacey's honeymoon, they returned to Essex for a big family meal at a local Italian.

During the chaotic meal, everyone but Smithy found out one by one that Nessa was pregnant. Until she returned to the table to deliver him with the bombshell news.

"Oh, Smithy, I've got something to tell you," she said.

"I'm pregnant. And you're the father."

Cue titles. Incredible.

8. Uncle Bryn and Nessa's duet

In Series two, Bryn and co. organised a secret party for Gwen's birthday.

To make the evening even better for his sister, Bryn and Nessa performed a duet, which is up there amongst the show's most iconic moments.

Taking to the stage, the duo belted out a version of Kenny Rodgers and Dolly Parton’s ballad Islands - which actually sounded pretty good. That was until Jason walked in though, bringing the performance crashing to a halt.

An hilariously memorable moment.

7. Gavin & Stacey's most iconic moments... we give you the fishing trip!

The biggest mystery in Gavin & Stacey is what really happened between Jason and Uncle Bryn during their fateful fishing trip.

We don't know, other than the fact that it had such an impact on their relationship that it stopped them from talking to each other.

We've had plenty of hints and teases about what really went down over the years.

"I know there’s times that he’s wondering how a man and his nephew ever could…," Bryn once began saying before being interrupted.

"You may know what happened, David, but you don’t know why it happened!," Bryn once shouted at Dave Coaches. "It was freezing cold, it was! And when you are that cold…"

In the 2019 Christmas special, it looked like we were finally going to find out what happened.

"You see everyone...it was supposed to be...What happened was, I..," Bryn began telling everyone, before the Shipman kids burst into the living room.

Every single time the dreaded fishing trip has been mentioned has been iconic, so we're including each instance here!

Will we finally find out what happened during this year's final Christmas special?

6. Smithy's curry order

So iconic people can still quote it word-for-word 15 years later!

During the second episode of series three, the Shipmans hosted an evening at their home in Essex where they ordered an Indian takeaway.

Cue Smithy announcing exactly what he wanted...

"Chicken bhuna, lamb bhuna, prawn bhuna, mushroom rice, bag of chips, keema naan, and nine poppadoms," he reeled off.

However, when people started suggesting that they'd be sharing everything, an annoyed Smithy ranted about how he was ordering for himself, not them.

"In fact, forget it, I want no part of it, I'll order mine and eat it in the car. I'm out!" he fumed.

5. "You're eating ham, Pam!"

Another hilarious moment from series 2 of Gavin & Stacey was Pam finally getting caught out over her faux vegetarianism.

Pam was insistent that she was veggie, after fumbling during the first time she met Stacey's family. Worried she'd look bad for not asking if anyone was vegetarian she ordered Mick to pick up a selection at the supermarket. But he returned as the Wests arrive and she somehow ended up telling the lie she was a veggie.

She managed to keep up the falsehood for some time (not that she was happy about it).

This was until Stacey found out the truth by walking in on her mother-in-law stuffing her face with ham.

"You're eating ham, Pam!" she exclaimed, leading to a guilty Pam protesting that she couldn't help herself.

"I’ve seen you, Pam. A scotch egg here, a bit of bacon there, putting those regular sausages into the Linda McCartney box," Stacey then said.

"I just get these cravings, you know!" Pam said in the LOL moment.

4. Stacey wants to stay in Barry

In season two, during Gwen's party, Gavin and Stacey's marital problems reared their ugly head, leading to a devastating conversation outside the party.

As an upset Stacey revealed that she feels "lonely" and wants to stay in Barry, Gavin agreed, saying that a few days at home would make her feel better.

"No, I think it's better if I stay here. I'm sorry, Gav. I'm not coming back," she then said.

When Gavin still didn't get it, Stacey snapped: "I don't want to live there anymore! I'm moving back home."

And titles... and jaw drops across the land.

3. 2008's Gavin & Stacey Christmas special bust-up

During the 2008 Christmas special, things descended into chaos on Christmas Eve when Gavin and Stacey announced to the family that they were moving to Barry.

Cue unbridled fury from Smithy and Pam.

"You couldn't wait, could you?! Right from day one, you got your claws in. And now you're trying to take him away from me!" a furious, tipsy Pam screeched.

"Six months?! Six months?! 24 weeks?!" Smithy raged.

Pam then turned her fury on Gwen and Nessa, with the latter inviting Pam to "make something of it" outside.

Things just got worse and worse, with everyone shouting, until Pete landed a punch on Dave Coaches.

A proper laugh-out-loud moment in a series full to the brim with them.

2. Smithy crashes the wedding

In the final episode of season 3, Nessa was about to walk down the aisle with Dave Coaches.

Among the wedding goers were all her friends, her dad, and even John Prescott.

However, there was no Smithy - until the vicar asked if anyone objected to the marriage.

"I know you might think this is some big romantic gesture or that I'm declaring my love for her or something, but I'm not," Smithy told the crowd as he walked down the aisle.

Smithy then went on to say how a lot of the time, Nessa "repulses" him.

"If you're marrying Dave so you've got someone to be a father for your son, someone to help you, and support you, and be around, I'm saying you've already got that. Me. I can be those things," Smithy continued.

"If you're marrying him, you should be doing it for the right reasons, because you love him. But I don't think you do."

And despite Nessa's protestations that she loves Dave, it was him who called off the wedding, saying: "I don't think you do love me".

One of the most iconic moments in the whole series - and a great way to end Gavin & Stacey's original run.

1. Nessa's proposal to Smithy tops the list of Gavin and Stacey's most iconic moments

The most recent episode of Gavin & Stacey, which aired in 2019, had without doubt the most iconic of iconic moments (yet!).

As the episode came to a close, and Smithy's new girlfriend Sonia (Boo! Hiss!) drove off back to her parents, Nessa and Smithy had a conversation outside the house over a cigarette.

"You're not everyone's cup of tea, but at the end of the day when all's said and done, you're tidy," Nessa told him.

"I means it. And I knows it's been complicated, you and me, all this like," she then went on.

"But I loves it. And, if truth be told, I loves you."

"I loves you. With all my heart," she then said, before getting down on one knee and taking out a ring.

"Marry me."

Cue titles and a FIVE-YEAR WAIT! We'll finally find out what happened next this Christmas! And add a few more iconic moments to the Gavin & Stacey list, no doubt.

The Gavin and Stacey Christmas Special airs on Christmas Day at 9pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
