The rural idyll of eight-year-old David Copperfield is brought to an abrupt end when his widowed mother Clara remarries. Young David takes an instant dislike to Mr Murdstone, his new stepfather, and the newcomer proves the feeling is more than mutual when he send the lad away to a boarding school run by a ruthless headmaster.
