A radio presenter is plotting to sabotage his adopted daughter's plans to publish her first novel and kills one of his employees for trying to help her. He thinks he has the perfect alibi, claiming that the victim was murdered while they were talking to each other on the phone, and there is a tape recording to prove it - but his ruse fails to fool the dishevelled detective.
