Simon Schama's Story of Us
Whose Britain Is it Anyway?
Season 1 Episode 2 of 3
Simon Schama traces how artists have tried to make sense of Britain's place in the world after the end of empire. As mass immigration changed the face of the country, creatives have attempted to redefine what British society looks like. He touches on the radical writing of Hanif Kureishi and examines cultural icons like James Bond - a character who reflected the anxieties of those who felt uneasy with Britain's diminished status on the world stage. Simon also speaks to Jerry Dammers about the defiant revolution of 2 Tone band the Specials, conceived in the face of racially motivated violence, as well as Clive Myrie about his personal experiences of the Windrush scandal
Simon Schama's Story of Us airs on BBC Two Wales at 9:00 PM, Wednesday 15 January. (Subtitles, new, audio description.)
