Roman Crime and Ancient DNA

Season 12 Episode 4 of 6

Alice Roberts follows fascinating archaeological digs in the north of Britain, beginning with 100 students digging at Auckland Palace in County Durham for evidence of what happened here during Oliver Cromwell's brief Commonwealth. Alice also meets archaeologists working on the site of a new housing development, where hundreds of fragments of Roman coin moulds were discovered, and there's a return to a Cheshire site first visited in 2018. The former 13th-century graveyard at Poulton Farm has seen almost 1,000 skeletons excavated over the past 30 years - and now, new DNA analysis is revealing secrets that have remained hidden in the soil for centuries

Digging for Britain airs on BBC Two Wales at 8:00 PM, Tuesday 14 January. (Subtitles, new, audio description.)
