Wartime Farm
Season 1 Episode 5 of 8
Ruth Goodman, Peter Ginn and Alex Langlands learn about how farmers reacted to shortages in 1942, as attacks by German U-boats on British ships resulted in a dramatic reduction in imports to the UK. Ruth and her daughter Eve become 'lumber Jills' in the New Forest as they discover how women were drafted in to fell trees as wood supplies dwindled, Peter tries to get around a lack of petrol by converting an ambulance to run on coal gas, and Alex learns about the lives of Bevin Boys - conscripted men who were sent to work in mines rather than join the armed forces. The programme also reveals how Emergency Feeding Centres helped introduce the concept of high-street dining to the masses
Wartime Farm airs on Together TV at 3:00 AM, Wednesday 22 January.
