Ruth and her daughter Eve become 'lumber Jills' in the New Forest as they discover how women were drafted in to fell trees as wood supplies dwindled, Peter tries to get around a lack of petrol by converting an ambulance to run on coal gas, and Alex learns about the lives of Bevin Boys - conscripted men who were sent to work in mines rather than join the armed forces.
