Beyond the Great Wall

Season 1 Episode 4 of 6

Built to shelter ancient China from hostile barbarians to the north, the Great Wall also serves as a cultural curtain, beyond which can be found a variety of traditions. This programme goes outside the Wall to meet tribes of reindeer herders on the Siberian border, and explores deserts to the north where ruined cities were once bustling staging posts for camel trains on the legendary Silk Road

Wild China airs on BBC Two HD at 3:15 PM, Thursday 30 January. (Subtitles, repeat, audio description.)
