Nick Knowles travels to Epsom to meet paramedics Sam and Ben Laws, who have two children, one with special needs. The couple already find it hard, working opposite shifts which mean they often don't see each other for days on end - and to make matters worse, they have found their house to be inadequate for their requirements. After a close friend nominates them for the DIY SOS treatment, Nick and the team - bolstered by an army of local tradespeople - turn up to transform it into a home they can enjoy as a family, now and in the future
