The Card
The bright but penniless son of a 19th-century washerwoman resorts to a variety of ingenious methods to get on in the world. He struggles to avoid the advances of a gold-digger, and eventually comes to realise he has a responsibility to his roots. Period comedy based on a story by Arnold Bennett, starring Alec Guinness, Glynis Johns, Valerie Hobson and Petula Clark
