Holidaymaker John falls into a coma after contracting pneumonia. His wife Agnes flies out to be by his side, and regularly prays in the chapel as he remains unconscious for days. Sixty-one-year-old Joseph from Stockton-on-Tees, Co Durham, is told he has a hernia on his spine, and his insurance will not cover the full cost of treating it. Meanwhile, receptionist Maureen gives details of the romantic relationships between staff at the hospital. Narrated by John Thomson
