50s & 60s

Season 8 Episode 3 of 6

Billy Bragg pays the Arderns a visit as they get to grips with 1960s life. The new decade brings a dizzying number of new developments, including skiffle music, hula hoops and sliced bread. It also brought about a seismic change in shopping with the introduction of self-service. The rise of supermarkets sees the personal service of the Arderns' shop under threat, forcing them to diversify their stock. The 1960s saw Sheffield becoming home to new workers from across the Commonwealth, many of whom share their memories of the era and the importance of the local corner shop to shift workers

Back in Time for the Corner Shop airs on BBC Two HD at 3:15 PM, Monday 7 October. (Subtitles, repeat, audio description.)
