The detectives track down Douthwaite by realising that he uses famous singers as his aliases. He and Robin head to the guesthouse in Skegness that he's now running with his wife. He denies any involvement in Margot's disappearance and seems genuinely scared to have his new identity discovered. Strike realises that Margot's killer has been responsible for many other murders which have gone undetected over the years, and sets out to entrap them.
