In the 100th episode of the crime drama, a series of flashbacks reveals how Patrick Jane came to the CBI with the hope of gaining access to the Red John case files, having lost his wife and daughter the previous year at the hands of the serial killer. After provoking an agent into attacking him, Jane threatens to sue unless he is allowed to stick around, and his first case with the bureau is to solve the murder of a judge's son, whose body was found next to his car on a remote road.
