Nightclub owner Paul Verrier is tricked into believing that the Saint is trying to kill him, so contacts various people to murder Templer. One of his nefarious contacts is unknown to him visually, so when the Saint eventually pays a call Verrier mistakes him for his hired assassin and inadvertently hires the Saint to kill himself.
