Extraordinary Portraits with Bill Bailey
Gill & David
Season 4 Episode 3 of 6
Bill matches ex-professional goalkeeper David James with Gill Sayell, a footballing pioneer who played in the unofficial Women's World Cup in 1971. Gill was just 14 years old when she was picked to represent England in Mexico, but when the tournament was over she and her team-mates were hit with a ban by the Football Association, which had forbidden women from playing on professional pitches. Many never took to the field again, but Gill fought on to inspire a whole new generation. Former England player David has donated his work to charities and created paintings to support some of his favourite causes
Extraordinary Portraits with Bill Bailey airs on BBC One East HD at 7:30 PM, Friday 21 February. (Subtitles, new, audio description.)
