A look at the year music went portable with the launch of the Sony walkman, and saw the Mod revival and 2-tone music flourish with the Jam, the Specials, Madness and the Selecter. New Wave also thrived with Elvis Costello, Squeeze and Gary Numan. On a more comical note, Dame Edna Everage's performance of Waltzing Matilda made a big impression, incongruously alongside reggae-influenced punk rock band the Ruts. Elsewhere, Chas & Dave continued their success story with Gertcha
