A young family liaison officer is assigned to investigate the brutal murder of Lady Mary Maclean, wife of local tycoon Sir Douglas, at a remote island mansion. The investigation unravels on the island of Harris, from where the officer mysteriously fled 10 years previously. The evidence points towards the murder being committed by a violent intruder during a botched burglary. However, when Sir Douglas' account of the night fails to match the evidence, Kat starts to believe that the motive for the killing may lead straight back to the family.
