On September 1 1939 German forces invaded Poland as four Luftwaffe bomber groups attacked Warsaw. By September 6 the city's anti-aircraft defences had been reduced to a few guns and much of the Polish capital was in ruins. The bomber aircraft dominated the skies throughout the rest of the Second World War as fleets stood ready on the airfields of every combatant nation
