While the Americans were guaranteed a place in this tournament as one of the three co-hosts, Paraguay progressed from the CONMEBOL qualification process, and though they finished sixth in the standings, they were one of four teams to finish tied on 28 points and were just one point behind second-placed Ecuador. There have been nine previous meetings between these nations, the first of which saw the USA claim a 3-0 victory at the inaugural World Cup in Uruguay in 1930, and most recently they clashed in a friendly encounter in November last year, when the United States triumphed by a 2-1 scoreline.
