Susan is outraged when Ben, ever the romantic, buys her a vacuum cleaner for Christmas, so in a desperate attempt to make amends, he gets her a necklace instead. However, when he discovers it for sale at half the price the following day, he is determined to return it and buy it again at the bargain rate - but the no-nonsense jeweller (guest star Julian Clary) is having none of it. To make matters worse, Susan turns up and the Harpers end up getting trapped in the department store overnight. Meanwhile, Janey, Michael and Alfie decide to give Susan and Ben a thoughtful present for a change, but despite their best efforts, it does not turn out quite as planned.
