Murders That Shocked the Nation
John Straffen: Britain's Longest Serving
Season 2 Episode 4 of 8
The presenter explores the case of John Straffen, who killed two young girls in the summer of 1951. He was found to be unfit to plead and committed to Broadmoor Hospital, but during a brief escape from the facility in 1952 he killed again. It was determined that the cause of his behaviour was severe brain damage, traced back to an attack of encephalitis as a child in India. When he died in 2007, he was the longest-serving prisoner in Britain
