A love story set against the backdrop of the 1947 Partition of India. It follows Tara Singh, a Sikh truck driver who rescues a Muslin girl, Sakina, from a crazed mob during communal riots. Later, as happily married parents they discover Sakina's father is still alive who was previously thought to have died in the riots. Sakina is invited to stay with her father, now the mayor of Lahore in Pakistan, upon reaching the city she learns of her father's plans - plans that include forcing Sakina to forget about her family and start life anew in Pakistan.
