The teams leave Cambodia at the end of the national holiday Pchum Ben and travel 1,400km through Thailand to the mountain town of Mae Sariang in the Shan Highlands on the Thai-Myanmar border. To reach the checkpoint, they must first circumnavigate the Tonle Sap Lake and decide whether to head west, taking on potentially faster routes, or opt for the eastern route, where lies Siem Reap, the gateway to Angkor Wat
