A convicted paedophile is spotted taking photographs of children by Rebus and a close colleague, who apparently reacts badly to the incident as he turns up dead the next day. However, the distraught detective thinks there's more to it than plain suicide. He vows to get to the bottom of the mystery, but soon becomes distracted by a plea from an old girlfriend to find her missing teenage son.
