The 1982 murder of Charles Self - a brutal crime in a well-to-do Dublin suburb and a frenzied attack in the privacy of a man's home. The perpetrator had targeted an openly gay man at a time when homosexuality was illegal and when gay men and women had begun to socialise more publicly. Charles' murder cast a dark shadow and the Gardaí's response only stoked further unrest; during their investigation, they 'rounded up' 1,500 gay men, many of whom to this day feel aggrieved and humiliated
