The Poplar midwives and medics return for the first of a two-part festive special ahead of a new series next year. It's Christmas 1969 and the Nonnatus midwives are as busy as ever, although their job is made even more difficult by a new strain of flu. Teddy Turner befriends a little girl whose family are living in abject poverty, learning they have no tree, presents or food for Christmas. The Buckles are excited about Reggie's homecoming, and the residents are concerned to learn that an escaped prisoner may be in the local area
