Trixie cares for Arlean Brewer, a heavily pregnant unmarried woman recently discharged from the Linchmere Mental Hospital after being diagnosed with depression and mania. When Arlene struggles with her new psychiatric drug regime, Trixie must draw on all her medical and emotional skills to avert disaster. Rising rates of gonorrhoea in the district cause alarm, and Dr Turner decides to implement a contact-tracing scheme run by the Greater London Council.
