Dorcas is horrified when Sydney catches measles. The disease begins to spread among the children of Lark Rise, and the hamlet's residents are forced to tear themselves away from gathering the harvest to care for the sick. When Daniel realises the residents could suffer severe food shortages during the winter, he postpones his departure and heads for Candleford to make an impassioned plea for help.
