The Real Charlie Chaplin (2021)
The Real Charlie Chaplin
The silent comedy icon grew up penniless in London. His father left when he was very young and his mother was institutionalised. He ended up in the workhouse, but found his way onto the stage via music hall where his talent allowed him to make a living. A stand-out performer, he travelled to America in 1910 at the age of 21. Then, quite by chance, he was offered a role in the movies by Keystone's Mack Sennett and the rest became entertainment history. Pearl Mackie narrates this look at Chaplin's life and work, featuring an in-depth interview he gave to Life magazine in 1966
The Real Charlie Chaplin airs on Film4 at 11:40 PM, Wednesday 4 December. (Subtitles.)
