Idealistic young writer Christian is drawn to the decadent backstreets of Paris, determined to play a part in the bohemian revolution. He falls for Satine, a courtesan from the famous Moulin Rouge, but a scheming duke also covets her affections, setting the scene for tragedy. Baz Luhrmann's romantic musical, with Ewan McGregor, Nicole Kidman, Jim Broadbent, Richard Roxburgh and John Leguizamo. Featuring reworkings of pop songs by Nirvana, David Bowie, Elton John and others. Moulin Rouge! won two of the eight Oscars it was nomated for, Best Art Direction-Set Decoration, and Best Costume Design. Bafta also handed out a couple of plaudits - Jim Broadbent for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role, and Craig Armstrong and Marius De Vries also landed the Anthony Asquith Best Film Music award at the 2002 ceremony. Trivia fans may note that at the time, this was the most lucrative musical since Grease in 1978
