In the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War, inquisitive youngster Ofelia is taken by her pregnant mother to live with the sadistic Capitan Vidal. In the surroundings of her new abode, the fairytale-obsessed girl ventures into an elaborate stone labyrinth, where she encounters a mysterious faun. The creature sets Ofelia a series of disturbing tasks which she must complete to journey to an underground kingdom, where she will be restored to the throne as a princess.
