Paddy Ó Fiannachta is a Connemara beekeeper who keeps the native Irish honey bee also known as Apis mellifera mellifera. Ireland is regarded as having one of the largest populations of these bees in the world, however these native Irish Bees are under threat due to hybridisation with non-native strains of honey bees. After his hives are destroyed by imported and invasive non-native bees, Connemara beekeeper Paddy Ó Fiannachta and islander John O'Halloran create a sanctuary on Inishbofin island in an effort to protect the native Irish honey bee
