The actor explores people's lives in the 1950s, beginning with the story of immigrant Irishwoman Mary Powell, who was determined to fulfil her childhood dreams of becoming a nurse. Tony also re-creates a day in the life of rag-and-bone man Flash John on the streets of Manchester, and tells the story of Doreen Turner, a working-class mother of five who went out to work so that her family could benefit from the consumer boom
