Helen Mirren stars in a two-part investigation for no-nonsense detective Jane Tennison. A Bosnian illegal immigrant's body is found covered in horrific torture wounds, and Tennison goes against her boss's retirement suggestion to take charge of the murder squad and catch the culprit, causing tensions to rise within her team. Chief Inspector Finch suspects the death is connected to an underworld gang, but Tennison thinks otherwise - believing the case to be linked to the devastating war in the victim's home country.
