80s & 90s

Season 8 Episode 5 of 6

The Arden family experience corner shop life in the 1980s and 1990s, when stores changed from primary shopping destinations to a place for last minute impulse buys and were forced to make the maximum use of their floor space to stock thousands of products. The programme examines the impact of new legislation allowing supermarkets to open on Sundays, previously the only advantage small businesses had over them. ABC's Martin Fry visits the shop and reveals how the band used to use empty industrial units as cheap rehearsal space, and there is a look at the rise of the gaming industry and a revival of a famous 1980s marketing stunt

Back in Time for the Corner Shop airs on BBC Two HD at 3:15 PM, Wednesday 9 October. (Subtitles, repeat, audio description.)
