In 1849, Dorchester County, South Carolina, Araminta 'Minty' Ross and most of her family are slaves owned by Edward Brodess, who refuses to acknowledge their claim to freedom. After he dies, widow Eliza Brodess and venomous son Gideon assume control of the plantation and advertise troublemaker Minty for sale.
