Caleb and Joe in Emmerdale

Emmerdale star Ned Porteous has spoken about Joe’s contrived kidney plan and said Joe will do anything to save his own life.

Since returning to the Dales at Christmas, Joe Tate has been hiding health issues. It was recently revealed that he has chronic kidney disease and is in desperate need of a transplant.

Rather than go down the conventional route, Joe has chosen to steal an organ and do the operation himself… as you do. Actor Ned has revealed why that is.

Joe’s kidney plan in Emmerdale

It was recently revealed that Joe is in desperate need of a kidney transplant in order to save his life.

After a failed attempt with Noah, who turned out to not be a match, Joe has now set his sights on his uncle, Caleb Miligan. Thanks to Manpreet, Joe knows that Caleb definitely is a match.

Joe and his accomplice Dr Crowley have been putting things in place at a private hospital, where the operation will take place.

Upcoming scenes will see Joe end up frustrated when the woman he hired fails to drug Caleb. In order to get Caleb to the private clinic, Joe resorts to violence and orders his heavy to stab Caleb instead.

Dr Crowley is furious, as this wasn’t part of the plan. So as well as a kidney transplant, he also has to save Caleb’s life.

Ned Porteous speaks out on Joe’s kidney theft plan

Since the storyline was revealed, fans have rightly argued that it’s a bit fat-fetched and have questioned why Joe doesn’t just go to a regular hospital like a normal person.

Actor Ned has recently been speaking about this, and cited the long waiting times.

“I think he probably did try that,” Ned said about the NHS. “There is a downside, obviously, as wonderful as having a National Health Service is in this country and what a brilliant service they are. The downside being sometimes you have to wait to get what you want. There are lots of people on these transplant lists.

“And Joe, I think would assume that maybe his life is more important than others. So he’s going to do whatever he can to jump that list. If he believes that he’s only got X amount of weeks or months left, you know, what would he be willing to do to jump it. He’s definitely not going to be waiting the four, five, six, sometimes even longer amount of months that it is to get your kidney properly.”

On whether Joe has any empathy, Ned added: “I don’t think Joe is a complete psychopath and without empathy. I think he would care if something bad were to happen. But I think he would also put his own life before Caleb’s.

“I think he’s willing to accept the consequences of a worst case scenario, which is obviously sad to say, but in the mission of self preservation, I’m sure he would do anything.”
